The future for third-generation mobile phones - which allow staff to send pictures to head office from anywhere and transmit data many times faster than today - looks shaky, as Simon Vail reports

Take a trip to Japan and you’ll see plenty of people making calls on the latest generation of mobile phones. They can switch the phone on and see a colour picture of the person they’re calling.
