Tax column War, faltering markets, the euro question… there’s a lot at stake at the moment, but this year’s Budget was very much a tinkering affair

Bruised by NI rises, the potential cost of the war in Iraq and uninspiring economic forecasts, taxpayers could rightly have feared Gordon Brown’s seventh Budget. Would he use his annual ‘moment’ to announce measures to increase the tax take? In fact, we were met with a Budget that was short on big announcements but long on technical detail.
