The ancient Greeks recognised the benefits of mentoring and it still has much to offer organisations today, says Alastair Hamill

Mentors have a longer history than many people realise. Odysseus started the trend, putting his son in the care of the wise Mentor while he was at sea. Buddha is the metaphysical hero of oriental mythology, Merlin the magician was King Arthur’s mentor in medieval times and Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi was mentor to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.
