Reasons to be cheerful

There are mixed signals from the economy – but it’s not all doom and gloom

The year started with a flourish for the recruitment industry, with many firms reporting healthy sales figures and making bullish predictions about the employment market.

But it looks unlikely that 2005 will be remembered as a spectacular year for the industry, at least not in the UK.

Although unemployment remains fairly low, the UK’s economy is stumbling...
