The number of people in ‘nonfarm’ employment in the US was up by 227,000 in February, with employment rising in the healthcare & social assistance, leisure & hospitality, manufacturing, mining and professional & business services.

The number of people in ‘nonfarm’ employment in the US was up by 227,000 in February, with employment rising in the healthcare & social assistance, leisure & hospitality, manufacturing, mining and professional & business services.
Nonfarm employment refers to those working outside general government, private households, not-for-profit organisations serving individuals and farms. Those sectors counting as ‘nonfarm employment’ accounted for about 77% of the nation’s GDP in 2000.The number of unemployed persons (12.8m) was “essentially unchanged”, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, leaving the unemployment rate at 8.3%.
Professional & business services employment rose by 82,000 in the month, while healthcare & social assistance added 61,000 jobs, leisure & hospitality 44,000, manufacturing 31,000 and mining 7,000.
The construction sector shedded 14,000 jobs after two months of job gains.
