The number of IT contractors working in the telecoms sector has increased 43% year-on-year as retailers increase mobile internet spend.

In 2010, 12.2% of IT contractors worked in the telecoms sector, which jumped to 17.4% in 2011, according to research from contractor services firm giant group.According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, the online spend in for retailers in December 2011 was £7.9bn, up 16.5% on the previous year.

Matthew Brown, managing director of giant, says: “Ironically, despite some retailers struggling, retail is one of the few sectors which increased its use of IT skills over the past year.

“Compared to the banking sector, retailers have never been particularly intense users of IT skills… A surprising number of retailers don’t offer e-commerce functionality.”

Giant’s research also shows a small drop in the time contractors spend in between contractors – 19.6% spent more than 31 days between contracts in 2011, compared to 21.6% in 2010.

It also suggests that contractors remain concerned about job security – when asked whether they would prefer a longer term contract or higher hourly pay, just under two in three plumped for the longer contract.
