HR firm Mercer has issued a 12-item list of actions that multinational firms must take to ensure international assignment policies are competitive and aligned with business objectives this year.
Carlos Mestre, partner in Mercer’s Global Mobility business in Europe, says: “Employers face a difficult balancing act as they continue to manage human capital costs without losing competitive advantage in important markets.“Multinational employers must continue to deploy workers outside their home countries. Yet the total cost of moving a senior executive with family abroad for a multi-year commitment, including compensation, benefits and special accommodations, can easily be three times base pay.”
The checklist includes looking at strategy vs reality, looking to hire locally and looking after expats – and their families to avoid them returning home before their contracts are finished.
