Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that an incentive of £1,500 will be offered to small employers upon hiring their first apprentice.
The government expects to support 40,000 new apprenticeships over the next year.Additionally, businesses and training providers can start bidding from today for a share of £6m of higher apprenticeship funding.
The prime minister says: “Under this government apprenticeship starts are increasing at a record rate, with improvements across the age range, in all sectors, throughout the country.
“By making apprenticeships a gold standard option for ambitious young people, we are sending a message that technical excellence is as highly valued as academic prowess.”
The announcement comes on the second day of National Apprenticeship Week, and follows housing firm Lovell and energy firm Opus Energy announcing the start of new apprenticeship schemes.
Lovell has already taken on two Doncaster teenagers onto a two-year training programme as trainee bricklayer and apprentice joiner respectively.
Lovell regional director Noel Adams says: “Giving local people this type of opportunity is a vital part of our work creating a long-term legacy in communities and with youth unemployment at a record high, it’s probably never been more important.”
Opus Energy launches an apprenticeship scheme working with training firm First4Skills and will be looking for five apprentices in two customer services roles.
Annamarie Petsis Jones, head of HR, learning and development atOpus Energy, says: “We’re looking for a complete range of applicants, so not just school leavers but anyone with a genuine interest in working in the energy sector, a true passion for excellent customer service and an ambition to learn and develop within Opus Energy.”
