The proportion of companies hiring into their legal departments across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in Q1 2012 was a third higher than expected.
This is according to a survey from international legal recruiter Laurence Simons and global bar association the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), which also finds that 61% of lawyers in practice would consider a move in-house.Previously, 40% of firms said they expected their legal headcounts to increase, but in the event 53% took on more staff in this area. The external spend on legal services by legal departments has fallen 13% in the last four years.
The UK was the nation with the most in-house legal recruitment, with 30% of the total hires in the region, followed by 24% in Germany and 20% in France.
Laurence Simons global managing director Naveen Tuli says: “In a marketplace where companies are continually looking to maximise the value they get from their legal teams, spending on practice lawyers has been squeezed as in-house teams have been required to take on more responsibility… The ultimate result is that an increasing number of practice lawyers are realising there are great opportunities to be had in-house.”
