Work started last Monday (9 July) on an expansion of the University of Dundee’s College of Life Sciences that will create around 200 further research jobs.

The new £12.5m Centre for Translational and Interdisciplinary Discovery is scheduled to be finished in autumn 2013, adding to the 1,000-plus scientists, research students and support staff from 62 countries already working in the department. For the funding, £5m comes from the University of Dundee, with a peer-reviewed Wellcome-Wolfson Capital Award in Biomedical Science of £4.875m also contributing, and the rest raised due to local funding agencies and charitable trusts.

Professor Michael Ferguson, dean of research in the College of Life Sciences, says: “Universities are very good at innovation. What they haven't been quite so good at is developing the capability to translate that innovation into new medicines and applications. This new Centre will help us provide that bridging point.”
