Bullying won’t impact on bank’s recruitment
Former City high-flyer Helen Green may have suffered long-term bullying from former colleagues at Deutsche Bank, but a partner in the law firm that represented Green says he doubts that the case will affect the bank’s ability to recruit.
Green was awarded £800,000 for being the target of a relentless bullying campaign that led to two nervous breakdowns.
“The treatment Ms Green suffered was extreme and exceptional within Deutsche, and the fact remains that banks pay top salaries, which is probably still the most important factor in hiring good candidates,” says Daniel Naftalin of Mishcon de Reya Solicitors. “A few years ago, this firm acted on a high-profile bullying and harassment case against Cantor Fitzgerald but there is no evidence I have seen that they have had difficulties recruiting as a result.”
“Disappointing as this may sound, I think that in reality, Deutsche Bank will not have any difficulty with recruitment as a result of the Helen Green case.”
However, Naftalin says one implication of the judgment in Green’s favour may be that “employers take notice of the very high awards obtainable in court, even by those on relatively small salaries. This may lead them to review their bullying and harassment procedures, and lead to an increase in training about how to spot bullying and harassment in the workplace and how to deal with it”.
