The longer established and larger-sized companies are seen as having the biggest impact on the recruitment market, according to a survey of nearly 250 industry professionals by rec-to-rec firm Bowden Mayes.
This finding should not come as a huge surprise, but interestingly the very smallest firms are seen as the next most influential. When asked who is making the biggest impact in the market, 51% of respondents said that large firms with over 100 consultants were the most significant, followed by the very smallest, with 10 or fewer consultants, with 20%. SME firms, with 10-50 fee earners, were seen as the biggest hitters by 19% of respondents, and mid-sized firms just 10%.
The survey also shows that new entrants are struggling to be seen as major players, with the date of foundation of the companies recruiters thought were having the biggest impact also measured. In total, 7% of these companies were founded in 2010 or more recently, while 45% have been going since before 2000.
All big name recruiters appeared on the list of the most influential companies, with Michael Page (12%) and Robert Walters (9%) leading the way in a list that showed a large amount of variety. Eight companies garnered 3% of the vote or more, but 46% of votes were dispersed among ‘other’ companies.

Just goes to show how fragmented the UK recruitment industry is. I think it was Tom Peters who said that whilst the cake is getting bigger, there are more players in it getting smaller slices.
