Olympics is great news for recruiters

Huge demand expected in construction and hospitality sectors

Recruitment experts are looking forward to the prospects for the industry after London sensationally scooped the 2012 Olympic Games.

The construction, hospitality and temporary placement markets should receive a huge shot in the arm from the global event.

The immense scale of the proposed Olympic complex, near Stratford in East London, has come as a timely boost for construction in the capital, says Dave Parfitt, account director for People, a recruitment and executive search business for the construction and property sector.

He said: “With work at Wembley and Heathrow’s Terminal 5 soon to finish, there is set to be huge competition for the event’s building projects.”

Global recruiter Adecco is looking forward to enjoying similar success after it was an official staff supplier to the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Mark Bloxham, Adecco marketing manager, said: “We are delighted that London will be hosting the Olympics in 2012.

“Winning the bid is a huge achievement and there will be some fantastic opportunities in the run-up to the event. Our experience working on the Commonwealth Games in 2002 highlights the commercial benefits to business and the increase in job opportunities that such as prestigious event will bring to the whole of the UK.”

Marcia Roberts, REC deputy chief executive, believes that the winning bid will be a chance to show the value of temporary work to the recruitment industry.

“Without temporary workers, an event of such magnitude would be unable to take place,” said Roberts.

She also called on the government to maintain its strong stance on the Agency Workers Directive.

The directive, proposed by the European Commission, calls for equal pay and conditions for temps after their first six weeks in employment, which could have huge ramifications for the recruitment industry.
