The man who was crowned the UK's best temporary worker has described his success as "unreal".

Office worker Michael Ross, from York, was named as the winner of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's One In a Million Award during a glitzy champagne reception at the House of Commons last week.

Ross was fighting back tears as he told Recruiter: "It's unreal. I never thought I'd win and all of a sudden it dawned on me on Monday that I was coming to the House of Commons.

"It's nice to be recognised and to know that the personal touches I've used to try and help people have been appreciated."

Ross, who was nominated by Adecco's York branch, beat off 13 winners in sectoral, diversity and temp-to-perm categories.

Amanda Allcock, branch manager for Adecco in York, said: "He's always been available for anything we've asked him to do — we've got clients who fight over him."

Ross is currently working long-term as a PA to Alzheimer's Society director Maggie Williams.

Ross was presented with his award by employment relations minister Jim Fitzpatrick MP, who told the gathering: "We are able to celebrate the contribution of temporary workers, who are changing attitudes in the working environment."
