Diary of... Darren West, team leader, Cerebra Recruitment

Monday

Left home at 6.45am — bus ride to the station and a short hop to Guildford. Arrive at the office, check the emails and then straight onto checking the weekly KPIs (key performance indicators). Team start to arrive at 8am ready for meetings. Sales are looking good: new clients on board and interviews arranged. No geeing up the team needed this morning, so off to a client meeting. The meeting in London goes really well. Sole agency has been agreed and yet more live roles for my colleagues to work on.

Tuesday

Time for me to do some recruiting of my own, working with my best client this morning. Have 10 needs for the same role at different levels and three interviews happening this morning - final preparation call to the candidates and hope they deliver their pitches. Make all follow-up calls to the candidates ready for the conference call in the morning.

Wednesday

Exciting journey in this morning, trying to dodge the screaming school kids on the slightly later train. Get to work for 8.30am and prepare myself for the conference call to the client. Client meetings with the candidates yesterday went very well - offered two of the three candidates and set up a further three meetings. Spoke to candidates about the offer; they are both verbally accepting and have given provisional start dates. An excellent day followed by a few beers and the England match.

Thursday

Today is spent delivering a training course to a new colleague. It’s a great opportunity for them to get a proper feel for the culture of the business, as well as learn what is expected of them and how we can help them achieve their goals. Although most of the initial induction is the same, their level of previous experience obviously makes a difference, so new angles are always needed.

Friday

Relaxing journey to work this morning. With £1 paid to Chase (a local children’s hospice that supports terminally ill children and their families) on arriving to work for dress down Friday, I open up my email to expect the weekly lunch email from our office administrator. With that duly excepted, it’s time to chase and make sure the offers have left that were made earlier in the week. Finish the day with a few well earned beverages before heading out for dinner with a group of friends.
