Diary of...Robert Earles Gas Manager - permanent division, Saints Personnel
Monday
Monday
Arrive early to the office, grab a coffee and sit down with one of my consultants to run through our plan for the week, which includes keeping on top of potential vacancies at the various companies we work with and targeting firms that have won contracts around the country. The day is spent resourcing service and breakdown engineers, technically testing them and receiving their industry qualifications. I’m happy to see the back of a busy Monday.
Tuesday
Receive a call on my way to work from a new client where I’d placed a contract plumber. They now need a contract carpenter instead, so I have to regrettably pull the plumber out and get in touch with a decent carpenter I know at short notice. When I arrive in the office, I ring candidates who are interviewing this morning to reiterate the need to be on time and bring relevant documentation.
Wednesday
Three interviews were booked in late last night; one of the things about giving managers your personal mobile is that they’ll call you at all hours! Out of the three, two turned up and one didn’t show. After calling the no-show and giving him a dressing down, I rang back the other two to congratulate them on being offered a start.
Thursday
Interviews can be like buses: you wait for what seems like an eternity and then suddenly, they all come at once. I arrive this morning with a full board of interviews, nine in total, across three clients. The important thing is to keep in touch with the engineers; regardless of the information you’ve emailed them, you have to make sure they’re happy, en route and still planning to attend the interview. Out of my nine interviews, eight attend — a pretty good show.
Friday
Friday is the time when accounts are most busy; chasing timesheets and answering calls from engineers. It’s all hands on deck as we all need to help the accounts department out, while still focusing on the job in hand. After a team meeting to galvanize the troops, I call around all of the clients who I’ve had staff out with this week to check that they’re happy with everything and confirm numbers for next week. Meetings are confirmed for Monday, timesheets chased up and as the day flies by, I wonder where the week went!
