Don’t piss off geeks, says Stratten
The message to would-be litigants who try to curb chatter on social media platforms such as Twitter is: “Don’t piss off geeks. We will take you down with our fury and pent-up anger.”
Canadian social media guru Scott Stratten offered that cautionary advisory Wednesday to a London audience of recruitment advertising agency professionals and in-house recruiters at an event sponsored by Jobsite.
The ‘unmarketing’ specialist said that the current controversy over footballer Ryan Giggs’ alleged affair would never have extended beyond UK borders as it has if Giggs had not tried to sue Twitter. Giggs’s identity was tweeted by thousands of users in defiance of a court ban on publicly naming him. “Nobody cared; now everybody cares,” Stratten said.
Stratten also offered insight into using social media, from Twitter to blogs, for business. Blog when you have something to say, he urged, not because you diarise blogging on a particular day of the week, and the likelihood is higher that your readers will share your message with others. “People spread ‘awesome’,” Stratten said. “They don’t spread Wednesdays.”
Stratten and an American social media guru, Amanda Hite, will discuss their philosophies and tips on social media usage this afternoon (Thursday, 26 May) from 3-3.45pm on a Fresh Thinking Livestreaming session moderated by Recruiter editor DeeDee Doke.
