Despite continuing job losses, and uncertainty about hiring intentions, Paul Venables, finance director at Hays, says, it’s not all bad news for recruiters in the City. There are grounds for optimism in certain niche areas.

“It’s probably the best time in your life to be a credit scorer,” Venables told Recruiter.

Hays  had signed up 50 recently made redundant City workers for this area, he says.  Contract and temporary placements are also “pretty resilient”, says Venables, while

employment lawyers are also in demand.  

However, Venables admits that fall-out from the credit crunch means that certain jobs are  “unlikely to come back” for some time, “probably 10 years”. These include some roles in structured finance as banks have reassessed the amount of risk they are  prepared to take on.
