HR: Be a master of all trades rather than one

It is better to be a generalist with good technical experience rather than a specialist, according to HR recruiters.

Michael Henry, director at Optimus Consulting, told Recruiter that specialisms were in demand but today’s jobs market called for a varied skill set.

“We do ask our HR people about what technical areas they are specialised in, be it employee relations, be it TUPE.

“It is better to have some very good technical experience. You want an HR person that has some technical areas that they are very good at.”

Michael Bolger, director at Badger Associates, adds: “Here in East Anglia, the number of roles for specialists is limited and becoming more limited.

“There is a much higher demand for generalists. The generalist will not command such a high level of pay but will find it easier to get a job.”
