Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson has lent his support to a campaign to delay the implementation of the Agency Workers Directive by multi-sector recruiter Anne Corder Recruitment.
The directive would give temporary workers the same benefits as permanent staff after 12 weeks.
Jackson called the directive ‘self-defeating’, adding that ‘we need to keep the pressure on the government’.
Anne Corder consultant Karen Dykes says: “We have noticed an upturn in the demand for temporary workers following the much talked about lull at the beginning of the year.
“We believe the introduction of this legislation will go some way to crushing that increase in demand with employers unable and unwilling to stand the extra cost.
“We have been fighting the introduction of this directive but as the necessary rubber stamping has now happened we are asking for the introduction to be delayed until the last possible date detailed which is October 2011. We have asked Mr Jackson to take up the case in Parliament.”
During a visit to ACR’s office Mr Jackson described the directive as ‘unworkable’.
