Oil and gas recruitment hit by gulf disaster fallout

The six-month moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform in April is hitting recruiters in the sector, according to the director of an oil and gas recruiter.

The moratorium, which was instigated by President Obama on 20 April, has led to oil and gas firms suspending work on deepwater wells in the Gulf.
Chris Chapman, director, at Atlantic Resourcing, told Recruiter that companies were having to redeploy staff that would normally work in the Gulf to other parts of the world.

Although he said that some staff would be needed in Africa and the Far East as firms moved their rigs to other parts of the world, the overall impact of the moratorium on recruitment was negative. “Transocean [the international drilling contractor] and other firms are looking for fewer staff from us because they have their own [spare] staff they need to deploy first,” said Chapman.
