Niche recruiter Blue Pelican Group is focusing more of its efforts on the relatively buoyant pharmaceutical sector, which has not been hit as hard as other sectors by the economic downturn.

Andrew Wise, head of Blue Pelican’s pharma division, told Recruiter that the company was now addressing roles in the pharmaceutical sector that had traditionally not been covered. “For example, our marketing and technology divisions are now much more heavily involved in handling roles from the pharma industry than 18 months ago,” he says.

Wise adds: “By re-focusing our other divisions early last year on pharma, we dodged the credit crunch bullet.”

Wise says that previously pharma was seen as “a challenging sector to get to grips with due to the specificity of requirements” and as a result less effort had been put into marketing activity in it. “We’re now enjoying a marked success in building on our existing life science sector-specific expertise,” he adds.
