The government is proposing that a certain level of social care would be provided free to everyone, while accommodation costs are deferred.

The current system means that anyone with a home or savings of £23,500 and over is not given any state-funding for their care.

Peter Cullimore, chair of the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) nursing and social care sector group, says: “We are delighted that the government has at long last realised the current arrangement is unfair, and does not allow for the best of care to be accessible to all those who need it.

“We therefore welcome the government’s commitment to changing the current situation. REC nursing and social care will be consulting its members on the proposals announced by ministers and will present a formal submission to the consultation in due course.”
