A deadline of 5 October has been set for candidates to apply for the chief executive's role at the REC.

An advertisement for the role in The Sunday Times on 9 September was headlined 'Are you ready to lead the Trade Association of the Year 2007?' Potential applicants were directed to the organisation's website for a full job description and person specification.

In addition to essential criteria such as "senior management experience in a similar position" and "ability to analyse complex policy issues", the successful candidate will, among a number of diverse characteristics, be required to "be clear in voice projection". The person specification also notes in two separate entries a required capability to "maintain a positive non-threatening presence which commands respect from staff, members and stakeholders".

Experience in recruitment was not a requirement, but the job decription points out that the successful chief executive must ensure "staff are selected appropriately through recruitment processes".
