Turbulent times ease for travel

Brighter skies could be ahead for travel recruiters.

Brighter skies could be ahead for travel recruiters.

Research from the Independent Transport Association shows that airline capacity, demand and load factors had all showed signs of recovery in April.

Julia Feuell, managing director at New Frontiers, told Recruiter that she has seen more signs of confidence in the sector, with more jobs being registered daily.

“Companies who are registering vacancies are much more confident about hiring. Before April, we found companies would register vacancies, then put them on hold to ‘wait and see’, then they would go live again, only to shelve hiring someone again. So I feel that this is a very good sign and must reflect a clearer picture in sales terms in the travel industry.”

Ian Brooks, director at Gail Kenny Executive Search, adds: “There are some green shoots in travel, but it is not widespread. The low-cost carriers are starting to see an uplift in traffic, as are UK hotels. The lower ends of the market are doing better for obvious reasons. Premium cabin air traffic is likely to remain subdued for a considerable time, as people get in to a habit of choosing the cheapest options.

“The candidate market still remains constant with around 1,000 CVs registering from different industries each week. This hasn’t increased or decreased, so I do feel generally we’re at the ‘bottom’ of this recession now.”

In the wake of concerns about employers asking job applicants for Facebook passwords at interview, social media guru and founder of #Tru events, Bill Boorman, tells Recruiter that such cases are still rare.
