Turbulent times for travel candidates

Candidates are facing tough times due to an ever increasing talent pool, according to travel recruiters.

Last week Ryanair announced a capacity cut at London Stansted of 40% this winter,
expected to result in around 2,500 job losses.

Ian Brooks, director at Gail Kenny Executive Search, told Recruiter: “More and more candidates are coming on to the market, although we are careful not to overload our database with candidates that we are unlikely to find jobs for or who do not meet our standard criteria.

“Some of the people who will lose their jobs at Ryanair will hopefully be able to find jobs in other sectors, as it is generally accepted that airline staff are well trained, disciplined and hard working. It will depend mainly on how much the economy picks up this winter.”

Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, adds: “Ryanair’s decision to reduce capacity at Stansted may not be followed by other airlines who would appear to be enjoying higher passenger volumes.

“Major job losses will inevitably impact on industry talent, competitors will hire from the talent fallout and other industries will benefit by hiring those with transferrable skills.”
