Hospitality & tourism was the only sector to see an increase in job vacancies nationwide in September in New Zealand, bucking a negative nationwide trend.

Hospitality & tourism was the only sector to see an increase in job vacancies nationwide in September in New Zealand, bucking a negative nationwide trend.
The Department of Labour’s monthly Jobs Online report, which measures changes in vacancies on the country’s two main job sites, Seek and Trade Me Jobs, saw skilled job vacancies drop 5.4% in September, with all roles falling by 4.5%, following a rise in both figures in August.Skilled jobs vacancies fell in all regions and sectors apart from hospitality & tourism, which saw a 1.9% month-on-month rise, although year-on-year gains have been seen in healthcare & medical (16.9%), construction & engineering (20.5%) and other (16.1%), as well as in hospitality itself (6%).
Regionally, the smallest skilled jobs decline was seen in Canterbury, at 1.4%. This is also the region with the largest annual growth, of 24%. As reported by Recruiter in September, the region has been boosted by the need for labour to rebuild the city of Christchurch following the February 2011 earthquake.
