Stay in UK for defence jobs, PM urges Scots

Prime Minister David Cameron has stressed the importance of the defence industry as a provider of jobs in Scotland – jobs he suggests could be lost if the country gained independence.
Thu, 4 Apr 2013Prime Minister David Cameron has stressed the importance of the defence industry as a provider of jobs in Scotland – jobs he suggests could be lost if the country gained independence.

Cameron says: “Being part of the UK opens doors for the Scottish defence industry around the globe. When we sell Typhoons [jet fighters] overseas, this benefits jobs and growth for companies making components in Scotland.

“Scotland counts for more on the world stage because it is part of the United Kingdom and Scottish defence jobs are more secure as part of the UK.”

His statement, made ahead of a visit to a defence industry site in Scotland today, also notes that the Scots defence sector employs over 12,600 people and has annual sales in excess of £1.8bn.

Cameron concludes: “Defence matters. We are stronger and safer together.”
