Better career development is the primary reason why most jobseekers look more kindly upon the public sector as a potential employer, according to a survey from job site totaljobs.com.

While 64% of around 2,700 jobseekers surveyed said that given two identical roles, they would prefer to work in the public sector over the private sector, 59% of these say the prime reason for feeling this is better career development.

A further 54% say public sector jobs are attractive because they offer them the chance to give something back to society.

Overall, 56% would recommend a job in the public sector to graduates. However, 52% think cuts to pay and pension will deter candidates from joining the sector.

Comments totaljobs director of public sector Mike Booker: “With more public sector cuts anticipated and high demand for the positions available, competition will be fierce. Recruiters can help jobseekers with private sector experience identify their transferrable skills and communicate their passion to convince potential employers that they can successfully make the transition.”
