The Department for Business, Innovation and Schools has named the Lancashire town of Burnley as the most enterprising place in Britain, as one of four winners of this year’s Enterprising Britain Awards.
Burnley was praised for its support of small and medium-sized businesses and for successfully reframing perceptions of the town.
The other three winners of the awards are The Premier League, for promoting enterprise, Hackney Council for promoting exports, and Aberdeen College in the school/further education college community enterprise category.
Garnering particular praise in Burnley’s entry was its Burnley Bondholder scheme, which brought together over 100 local firms to promote the area.
The Enterprising Britain Awards 2013 is being run on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills by Young Chamber. The four winners go on to represent the UK at the EU-managed European Enterprise Promotion Awards in Vilnius, Lithuania in November.
