Ex-TUC boss Barber is new chair at Acas

Sir Brendan Barber, formerly the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), is to become the new chair of the council of non-departmental public body the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).

Barber was TUC general secretary from 2003 to 2012, receiving a knighthood this year. He has also previously sat on the council of Acas from 1995 to 2004, as well as on the board of Sport England and the court of the bank of England, alongside current posts at Transport for London and City University London.
Barber says that Acas’ work “will be particularly important to meeting the challenge of building a genuine sustainable recovery with fairness at work at its heart”.
He will join the organisation in the new-year to serve a three-year term, succeeding Ed Sweeney.
Sweeney joined the organisation in late 2007 and has experience in the world of financial services including as general secretary of the Banking, Insurance and Finance Union, since merged into the Amicus union.
Founded in 1975, Acas is largely funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and governed by an independent council.
