Thu, 24 Oct 2013The rise and rise of internet shopping may be putting pressure on retail’s high street, but it is good news for logistics firm DPD.
The French-owned company is on course to create 1,000 new jobs this year, with a further 1,000 planned when a new distribution hub opens.
Currently employing 6,700 people in the UK, DPD has taken on 927 new staff so far this year, and this is set to top 1,000 by Christmas. The firm has created 2,400 new jobs in the past four years.
A spokesperson for DPD tells recruiter.co.uk that “the vast majority of the recruitment is expanding the network”, meaning drivers are in demand, as well warehouse jobs at the 50 regional depots the firm runs.
The news comes as The Daily Telegraph reports today that three major retailers posted rises in sales thanks to a “surge” in online shopping. ASOS, Home Retail Group and Sports Direct’s financials also suggest “a rebound in consumer confidence”, the paper reports.
In 2015 DPD also plans to open a new £100m parcel sorting hub in Hinckley in the East Midlands, which will create up to 1,000 permanent full-time jobs. The plans for the new hub were announced nearly 12 months ago, with planning permission granted this summer.
DPD’s chief executive officer Dwain McDonald says: “At a time when many of our competitors have been closing depots, we're expanding our network by opening new depots and upgrading in existing locations with purpose-built facilities and installing the latest equipment. Not only does that create more DPD jobs and improve our service in that location, it also helps to create jobs for the construction sector.”
