Supermarkets Sainsbury’s says that “around 2,000” of its 16,000 newly-announced temporary Christmas jobs will become permanent positions when the festive season is up.

The firm has announced applications are opening for its 16,000 seasonal roles online. As the first step, candidates will take an online test at the sainsburys.jobs website.
Last year, 2,300 people took on permanent work at Sainsbury’s after starting on a temporary contract.
For Christmas 2012, the supermarket giant took on 15,000 Christmas staff, announcing it two months earlier in mid-September.
Sainsbury’s has over 1,100 stores across the UK with 157,000 staff. It said in November 2012 that it would create 10,000 new jobs in its convenience stores over the following three years.
