Tue, 12 Nov 2013Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced a new ‘City Deal’ to secure £953m of investment and 17,000 jobs in Portsmouth and Southampton.
Clegg’s ambitious plan is also signed today by the minister for cities Greg Clark, and local authorities and business groups.
The central focus of the deal is the Ministry of Defence’s agreement to transfer its sites on Tipner-Horsea Island to Portsmouth City Council for what the deputy prime minister’s office calls “a nominal fee”, which should unlock £831m of investment.
This will create more than 4,700 permanent new jobs in the marine, maritime and advanced manufacturing sectors, as well as more than 13,000 construction jobs.
It will also support 1,000 people who have been long-term unemployed over the next two years through projects sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions alongside other not-for-profit organisations.
The first wave of City Deals, agreed with the eight core cities, were finalised in September 2012, with Portsmouth and Southampton one of 20 deals in the second wave.
