Wed, 4 Dec 2013A temporary medical technician who passed hepatitis C to dozens of patients in various US states has been sentenced to 39 years in jail.
This comes the week after the news that drug addict David Kwiatowski would face a lawsuit seeking financial settlements for victims, according to media reports.
Kwiatowski had pleaded guilty in August to the 14 charges against him.
He is being sued by his former employer Exeter Hospital, alongside four medical staffing firms Maxim Healthcare, the American Registry of Radiological Technologists, American HealthCare Services Association and Triage Staffing.
The New Jersey hospital has been at the centre of the scandal, with 32 of the 46 patients identified in the case against Kwiatowski treated at Exeter. And the hospital itself faced a lawsuit last year from 169 victims who either contracted hepatitis or were distressed at the news that they might have done.
Of the civil sentencing, Exeter Hospital comments on its website: “Exeter Hospital is thankful the prosecution was successful in securing a lengthy prison sentence for Mr Kwiatkowski as a result of the harm he admitted to causing so many patients and their families throughout the country and here in Exeter.
“Those patients and their families continue to be in our thoughts, and their care continues to remain a primary focus.”
