Canadian workers have mixed outlook on jobs, economy

Canadian workers are divided on the prospects for their country’s job market this year, according to multi-sector recruiter Randstad’s Canada 2014 Labour Trends Study.
Mon, 27 Jan 2014Canadian workers are divided on the prospects for their country’s job market this year, according to multi-sector recruiter Randstad’s Canada 2014 Labour Trends Study.

Nearly half of those surveyed (48%) were as confident in the 2014 job market as they were last year, while 25% were more confident and 27% less confident.

Workers appeared pessimistic about their chances of moving into new companies, with 33% expecting more difficulty in finding a new job this year than last year and only 20% thinking it would be easier.

However, many were hopeful about the Canadian economy, with 30% more confident than they were last year and 50% as confident as in 2013.
Randstad Canada president Tom Turpin says the “cautious optimism” in the survey’s findings was encouraging, given that 2013 had not been “a banner year” for the country’s job market.

Ipsos-Reid conducted the study on behalf of Randstad Canada and polled 2,076 employees and managers across Canada last December.
