A multi-million pound city deal will create 8,900 jobs for Sunderland, strengthening the foundations of economic growth for future generations, deputy prime minister Nick Clegg and minister for cities Greg Clark said on Friday (14 March).

Sunderland Council estimates the jobs will be created in the region before 2031 by projects, including a new bridge crossing the River Wear and a huge international advanced manufacturing park facility.

The advanced manufacturing park is expected to be completed by 2027, creating 5,200 new manufacturing jobs, with more than 500 new jobs created every year from 2018.

Councillor Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, told the Shields Gazette: “The first phase of the business park is to be centred on the new emerging renewable sector, and will see the creation of 5,000 highly-skilled jobs with the development on the site of anything up to 15,000 jobs in the long term.

“We need to make sure that the people of South Tyneside, still blighted by significant unemployment levels, get access to these jobs. That includes children now still at school, as this development will not happen overnight.”

British manufacturers are also reporting robust employment expectations with a net balance of 30% of firms planning to take on staff this year, according to manufacturing industry body, the EEF.
