Hailed as a “historic day” for the FTSE100 by business secretary Vince Cable, the appointment fulfilled a promise made by Glencore chairman Tony Hayward at the AGM in May.
It takes the UK a step closer to the target set by former trade minister Lord Davies in his report into gender balance in UK boardrooms for 25% of directors at FTSE100 companies to be women by next year.
Glencore had been a last bastion of all-male boards, made notorious three years ago after then chairman Simon Murray told the Sunday Telegraph: "Women are quite as intelligent as men. They have a tendency not to be so involved quite often and they're not so ambitious in business as men because they've got better things to do. Quite often they like bringing up their children and all sorts of other things."
