US defence and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin is to bolster Britain’s space race by setting up its own Space Systems business with the potential of employing hundreds of people within the next 10 years.

Lockheed Martin will establish an office at the UK Space Gateway in Harwell, Oxford and has already held talks with a number of British companies, universities as well as the government regarding research and development in the space industry.
A Lockheed Martin spokesman told Recruiter: “This project is very much at an early stage and the first phase will be to staff up with around 10 people, which we expect will increase to several hundred in future years, as our business grows organically and through acquisition.”
The company, which currently employs more than 3,000 staff in the UK with a further 10,000 in related supply chain industries, said it wanted to use the base as a springboard into European markets and beyond.
