Fri, 8 Aug 2014A three-month public consultation on comprehensive equality legislation for the Isle of Man will start on Monday  (11 August), chief minister Allan Bell MHK announced today.

The Equality Bill prohibits discrimination in employment as well as in the provision of goods and services on the grounds of specific characteristics including age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation. The Bill will replace the Disability Discrimination Act 2006 amongst other legislation.

Among other provisions, the Bill requires organisations to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate the needs of disabled people.

While based largely on the UK’s Equality Act 2010, there are Isle of Man adaptations, principally in relation to the enforcement structure, an Isle of Man government statement said.

The consultation will be available from Monday on the consultation section of the Isle of Man’s government website: http://www.gov.im/about-the-government/government/government-consultations/
