There has been strong employment growth in the business and professional services sector in the last three months, but growth has slowed in the service sector, according to the latest CBI Services Sector Survey released today.
The survey of 215 firms found the pace of recovery had slowed in the service sector in the three months to August, but optimism continued to increase with expectations for a return to growth in the coming quarter.
Growth in the professional services sector, which includes accountancy, legal and marketing firms, reached its highest rate in nearly seven years.
Business volumes increased for the fifth consecutive sector, with 33% of the 136 professional services firms to respond reporting they were up; 63% of firms expected the rate of business expansion to increase in the coming year; and 44% said numbers employed were up on three months ago.
The survey also reflected increased concern that the availability of staff was likely to limit business expansion.
CBI deputy director general Katja Hall said: “The slowing in the pace of growth and profits in the service sector reflects our view that momentum in the economy will ease in the second half of the year.”
