Australia recorded a surprise increase in unemployment, which hit a 10-year high in June, at seasonally adjusted 6.4%, up from 6.0% in May.

Economists had expected 13,000 new jobs to be created in July, according to The Australian, which would have left the unemployment rate steady at 6%, but total employment fell marginally and the number of unemployed increased to almost 790,000 people.
Meanwhile, the gangbuster US recovery continued to reduce unemployment, with seasonally adjusted claims in the week ending 2 August decreasing 14,000 to 289,000 on the previous week.
