Fri, 12 Sep 2014Logistics group DHL has teamed up with the Military of Defence to offer work placements to members of the armed forces shortly before they end their careers in military service.
The programme, which will run across the firm’s 400 operations in the UK, will include commercial driver training and developing employability skills. It will target members of the forces who have six months or less service to run.
Delivered in conjunction with the Careers Transition Partnership, the programme will kick off in the East Midlands and the South-West with up to 40 service leavers undergoing five days of training in either Bristol or Rugby.
This will be followed by a 12-day course, during which participants undertake commercial driving duties and develop employability skills. They will also complete any training modules needed to obtain a Driver Qualification Card – a mandatory requirement for commercial drivers from this month (September). Service leavers will also work towards a Certificate to Work – the recently launched and nationally recognised qualification for professional drivers.
In a press statement, Tim Slater, managing director of transport (UK and Ireland) at DHL Supply Chain, said: “Leavers from HM Forces possess a significant number of the core skills required to be successful drivers within our industry. The course has been specifically designed to plug any skills gaps they may have, to apply military driving expertise in the commercial world.”
