The Los Angeles City Council has voted to raise the minimum wage at large hotels to $15.37 (£9.41) an hour, the BBC has reported.
The rise will affect hotels with more than 300 rooms from 1 July 2015 and hotels with more than 150 rooms from a year later.
It will be one of the highest minimum wages in the US.
The move was opposed by the hospitality industry, which said it could result in worker redundancies.
The move comes after the Seattle City Council voted to raise its minimum wage to $15 over several years. San Francisco will vote on a similar rise in November.
