Thu, 29 Jan 2015The European Commission (EC), which plans to create more than 2.1m jobs, must ensure adequate training programmes are in place so quality roles are created to match skills demand across the continent, according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
EC president Jean-Claude Juncker has this week put forward a three-year investment plan, which he says could generate 2.1m new jobs by mid-2018.
In response to Juncker’s proposals, United Nations labour agency the ILO said in a report published this week that the plans must include a “significant” portion of private investment, particularly among “job-rich” small enterprises and address “wide disparities” in unemployment that exist across the European Union.
The ILO adds it is “crucial” for the plan to be accompanied by a longer-term employment strategy that focuses on “quality” jobs and balanced reforms.
An ILO spokesperson told Recruiter that to create quality jobs, training programmes that match skills in demand must be introduced, while public employment services must enhance the quality of job matches and new hires at entrepreneurial firms must play a role in helping start and expand these businesses.
“Overall, we call for implementing reforms that achieve quality employment creation while reconciling firms' need of adjustment over the business cycle,” he added.
