Hiring down in UK service sector despite rise in activity

While activity in the UK’s service sector has expanded at its fastest pace since the summer, hiring intentions among purchasing managers slipped to a three-month low, according to March’s Markit/Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply Index.

The index measuring activity in the sector posted a reading of 58.9 in March, up from 56.7 in February and the highest reading since August 2014. Any reading over 50 indicates growth.
However, figures obtained by Recruiter reveal the index measuring hiring activity fell to 56.8 in March, down from 57.3 in February and the lowest reading since December (54.8).
The activity reading for the UK’s service sector in March remains higher than other major European countries, including Germany (55.4), France (52.4), Italy (51.6) and Spain (57.3).
