Multi-sector recruiter Cordant Recruitment has hired Mark Sheldon, former managing director of recruitment giant Hays’ accountancy and finance business, to lead new consultancy Savant.

Savant will sit within Cordant Professional Staffing, which is led by managing director Sid Barnes, and recruits financial directors, chief financial officers, financial controllers and UK roles across four specialist business lines. These are: risk, compliance & governance; tax & treasury; credit management; and accountancy & financial management.

Sheldon, who also joins Cordant’s Professional Staffing Executive Board, told Recruiter the new business aims to offer a niche service to clients by ensuring consultants only work across the business line to which they are designated.

“Organisations are looking for more and more niche specialist roles. The recruitment sector in accountancy has followed that so individual consultants need to be more specialist and more expert.

“They [consultants] won’t try and fill another type of vacancy that doesn’t fit their area of specialism,” he added. “They just focus on generating the candidates to fill those opportunities on a day-to-day basis as and when they come up.”

And Savant has ambitious growth plans over the next couple of years, Sheldon added. “We’ve currently got six people in the business and the plan is to grow that to 20 in the next 12 months, and then some strong ambition over the next two years to double that number.”
