Nigeria is recruiting an additional 10,000 police officers in a bid to boost security and help drive down youth unemployment.
The BBC reports the country’s president Muhammadu Buhari announced the move earlier this week.
A senior officer told the BBC that the police force had an estimated 375,000 officers at the moment.
It adds that the number of police officers compared to the Nigeria’s population is below the UN's recommended benchmark of one police officer per 400 citizens.
Inadequate security has been blamed for the authorities' failure to defeat militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
