Weak Australian dollar boosts jobs in tourism and hospitality

A weak Australian dollar is helping to create jobs in tourism and hospitality, according to Australasian-based job board SEEK.
SEEK’s November employment index, released today, shows new job ads are up by 11% in the tourism and hospitality industry, compared with 9% for all jobs year-on-year.
Citing reports from government tourism research body Austrade, it said jobs were being created because the weak dollar led to rises of 7% in international visitors and 5% in domestic holidays.
SEEK’s data shows housekeepers and kitchen hands are particularly in demand, with both seeing a 20% year-on-year increase in jobs.
Chefs/cooks and management positions were both up by 17% while bar staff and waiting staff jobs rose by 7% and 6% respectively
However, demand for travel agents and reservations staff dropped by 17% and 6% respectively.
SEEK also found a dip in the number of applications per advertised job.
