Digging the scene: farmer wanted for Tristan da Cunha
If you have an agriculturally astute candidate who wants the quiet life, then the government of Tristan da Cunha, one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands, is on the lookout for a UK-experienced farmer to advise on livestock and agriculture.
A job advert placed on Britain’s National Farmers Union’s job pages says the volcanic island, about 1,750m South-West of South Africa, had a “problematic” financial situation and would benefit from reducing its reliance on imported food.
Just 265 residents live on the South Atlantic, UK overseas territory, and although there is farming on the island, more knowledge is needed.
The community, which already produces potatoes, intends to harvest fruits, vegetables and other crops.
While salary is negotiable, perks include accommodation and travel.
Travel may be difficult though – the island, seven sailing days away from Cape Town, is only accessible by sea and only for 60 days of the year.
Any takers? Anyone? (Let us know if you do put anyone forward – and if they set sail for the South Atlantic!)
